By the time crop disease is obvious from the edge of a field, it has usually been spreading for a while. The earlier a farmer knows what they are looking at, the cheaper and safer it is to deal with. Famo AI puts a plant doctor in the farmer's pocket: photograph the leaf, and Famo tells you what it most likely is and what to do.

What the scan gives you

A Famo crop-health scan returns a full diagnosis report:

  • The likely disease or pest, from more than 50 common plant diseases and pests, with a confidence level.
  • Risk ratings — leaf damage, spread risk, impact on the crop and an overall risk level.
  • Symptoms and causes, so you can confirm what you are seeing and understand why it happened.
  • Prevention, to stop it coming back next season.
  • Recommended treatments, with organic and conventional options, each with the product type, dosage, application method, instructions and duration.

One tap turns a treatment into a task or a full pest plan for that field, so the advice becomes a dated action with reminders rather than a note that gets forgotten.

How to take photos that give the best result

The quality of the diagnosis depends on the quality of the photos. Famo accepts one to four photos per scan. For the best accuracy:

  1. Photograph the problem, close up. Fill the frame with the affected leaf or stem, in focus.
  2. Use natural light. Avoid harsh midday glare and deep shade; turn your back to the sun so your shadow does not fall on the leaf.
  3. Show both sides. Many fungi and pests sit on the underside of the leaf.
  4. Include an early and a late symptom. A leaf just starting to show the problem and one further along helps tell similar diseases apart.
  5. Scan from the field's own page. Starting the scan from a field links it to that crop automatically, so Famo knows the crop and stage.

Why the field context matters

The same yellow spot means different things on rice, tomato or wheat, and at different growth stages. Because a Famo scan is linked to a field, the diagnosis takes into account:

  • which crop and variety is planted, and how many days since sowing,
  • recent weather — long leaf wetness and high humidity favour fungal disease,
  • the field's other alerts and recent soil readings.

On farms with a Famo Open Field package, leaf-wetness sensors and pest-trap cameras add an early warning before symptoms appear, so the scan becomes confirmation rather than discovery.

Organic and conventional options, side by side

Famo always shows organic options where they exist — biological controls such as Trichoderma or Bt, neem and other plant extracts, cultural measures — alongside conventional products. For fields set to organic mode under Famo Organic Farming, every input logged is checked against organic rules, so a farmer is warned before using something that could cost them their certification.

Scan history: a record of the field's health

Every scan is saved to the field's scan history with photos, date, diagnosis and severity. Over a season, that history shows whether a problem is spreading or under control, and it becomes valuable evidence for buyers, cooperatives and certifiers.

A note on responsibility

An AI diagnosis from photos is a strong first opinion, not a laboratory test. If a scan shows low confidence, if the risk is high, or if the treatment involves a restricted pesticide, check with a local extension officer or agronomist before acting — and always follow the label of any product you apply, including protective equipment and pre-harvest intervals.

Frequently asked questions

Does the scan need an internet connection? Yes. The photos are analysed online, so a scan needs a mobile-data or Wi-Fi connection. The rest of the field's information — tasks, readings and earlier scans — stays available offline.

Which crops can be scanned? Famo's scan covers common diseases and pests across field crops, vegetables and fruit, including rice, wheat, maize, tomato, potato, chilli and more.

Is the scan included in the free plan? You can start free; see Famo pricing for scan limits and season plans.
