The best fertilizer calculator is the one that turns your crop's nutrient targets into the exact products you can buy, for your own field size and in your own units, and shows its working. SmartSoil AI's free fertilizer calculator does that for urea, DAP, MOP and other common fertilizers, in acres, hectares, bigha, katha and more, and saves the answer as a branded PDF. This guide explains how to judge any calculator, then walks through ours with a real example. Updated October 2026.

In short

  • A good calculator starts from nutrient targets (kg of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O), not from a generic "kg per acre" for a crop.
  • It must count the nitrogen already inside DAP or MAP, or it will tell you to buy too much urea.
  • It should use your area unit. Bigha, katha, decimal, kanal, acre and hectare are all in daily use, and a wrong conversion is the commonest silent error.
  • It should end in things you can act on: kilograms, bags and split doses.
  • No calculator replaces a soil test. The targets you type in decide the answer.
  • Try the free SmartSoil AI fertilizer calculator. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up and stores nothing.

What a fertilizer calculator actually does

Every fertilizer calculator does the same sum:

Fertilizer (kg) = Nutrient needed (kg) ÷ Nutrient % in the product × 100

A 50 kg bag of urea (46-0-0) holds 23 kg of nitrogen, so 46 kg of nitrogen needs 100 kg of urea. The hard parts are everything around that line: converting your field to hectares, remembering that phosphorus and potassium are quoted as P₂O₅ and K₂O, and not forgetting that DAP also carries nitrogen. A calculator earns its place by doing those parts correctly every time. If you want the maths by hand, our step-by-step formula guide shows each step.

How to use the SmartSoil AI fertilizer calculator

The calculator has three short steps and updates as you type.

  1. Your field. Enter the area and pick the unit. Visitors reading in Bangla also get bigha, katha, chhatak and shatak.
  2. Nutrient targets. Enter how many kg of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P₂O₅) and potassium (K₂O) your crop needs, per hectare or per acre. Take the numbers from a soil test or your local extension office. "Use an example" fills in sample numbers so you can see how it works.
  3. Fertilizers you will use. Choose the phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen products your shop sells, or type the grade printed on the bag. Under "Bags, nitrogen doses and cost" you can set the bag size, split the nitrogen into one to three doses and add prices.

The result card on the right shows how much of each product to buy for the whole field, the rate per hectare or acre, and the number of bags.

Worked example: 2 acres

The screenshot above uses illustrative targets, not a recommendation: 120 kg N, 60 kg P₂O₅ and 40 kg K₂O per hectare on a 2-acre field, with DAP (18-46-0), MOP (0-0-60) and urea (46-0-0) in 50 kg bags and the nitrogen split into two doses.

ProductPer hectareFor 2 acresBags of 50 kg
DAP (18-46-0), for phosphorus130.4 kg105.6 kgabout 2.1
MOP (0-0-60), for potassium66.7 kg54 kgabout 1.1
Urea (46-0-0), for nitrogen209.8 kg169.8 kgabout 3.4

Two things make this answer right. First, the 105.6 kg of DAP already supplies about 19 kg of nitrogen, so the calculator takes that off the nitrogen target before working out the urea. A calculator that ignored it would suggest roughly 40 kg more urea for this field. Second, the urea is split into two doses of 84.9 kg, because nitrogen is easily lost and is usually applied in stages that match crop growth.

As a final check, the tool shows nutrients supplied versus needed (here 97.1 kg of N, 48.6 kg of P₂O₅ and 32.4 kg of K₂O, each matching its target), so you can see that the plan covers every nutrient without over-applying.

Save it as a branded PDF

Press Download PDF and the calculator creates an A4 fertilizer plan you can print, send on WhatsApp or show at the fertilizer shop. It includes the date and your field size, your nutrient targets, a table of products with total kilograms, rate and bags, the nitrogen doses, the supplied-versus-needed bars and a short note about estimates. At the bottom, a QR code opens Famo AI on Google Play.

Area units: bigha, katha, decimal, kanal, acre and hectare

Using the wrong unit is the most common reason a fertilizer plan goes wrong, so the calculator converts everything to square metres first.

UnitSquare metresWhere it is used
1 hectare10,000Worldwide
1 acre4,046.9Worldwide
1 bigha (20 katha)1,337.8Bangladesh
1 katha66.89Bangladesh
1 chhatak (1/16 katha)4.18Bangladesh
1 decimal (shatak)40.47Bangladesh
1 kanal (20 marla)505.9Pakistan

The size of a bigha differs between regions and countries. The calculator uses the Bangladesh standard of 20 katha. If your local bigha is different, enter the area in decimal or square metres instead.

What a fertilizer calculator cannot do

  • It cannot know your soil. If the soil already holds plenty of phosphorus, adding more wastes money. A soil test tells you what is low.
  • It cannot choose the crop rate for you. Targets depend on the crop, the yield you aim for, the soil and local advice.
  • It does not cover everything. Lime, sulfur, micronutrients, compost and manure sit outside the sum and all affect what your crop needs.
  • It gives estimates. Always check the percentage printed on your bag, which varies between brands.

How Famo AI helps

The calculator starts when you already know your targets. Famo AI helps you find them. Test the soil with the SmartSoil 8-in-1 sensor and the app shows nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium against target ranges, marks each as low, in range or high, keeps the history of every field and adds follow-up tasks. Then use the calculator to turn the nutrients you need into kilograms of the products you can buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free fertilizer calculator?

The best one works from nutrient targets, credits the nitrogen in DAP, uses your area unit, and ends in kilograms, bags and doses. The SmartSoil AI fertilizer calculator is free, needs no sign-up, and meets all eight checks in the table above.

How do I calculate fertilizer per acre?

Work out the kilograms of each nutrient your crop needs per acre, divide by the nutrient percentage in the product and multiply by 100. For 50 kg of nitrogen per acre, urea (46% N) gives 50 ÷ 46 × 100 = about 109 kg. The calculator does this for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium together and subtracts the nitrogen from DAP.

How much urea do I need per bigha?

It depends on your nitrogen target. As an illustration, a target of 60 kg of nitrogen per hectare is about 8 kg of nitrogen for one bigha (0.134 hectare), which is about 17.5 kg of urea. Enter your own target in the calculator and choose "bigha" in Bangla to get the exact figure.

Does the calculator tell me how much my crop needs?

No. You enter the targets, from a soil test or your local extension office, and the calculator turns them into products, bags and doses. The built-in example is only there to show the method.

Is it really free? Is my data stored?

It is free, with no sign-up. The sums and the PDF are made in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or stored on our servers.

Which languages does it support?

The calculator and its PDF are available in English, Bangla, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic and Brazilian Portuguese.

Can I use it for organic fertilizers?

The calculator covers mineral fertilizers by their printed percentages. For compost and manure, check the nutrient content on a lab report or local guide and treat it as a supplement.
